Donald Young

Donald Reed Young, son of Milton and Jennie (Christensen) Young, was born July 30, 1927 in Clear Lake, Iowa, where he grew up and attended school. Following his schooling, he farmed with his brother for a short time. He then began a career as a truck driver, logging many hours on the road. On June 1, 1971, he was united in marriage to Elaine Baxter in Naussa, Iowa. Following their marriage the couple made their home in Rockwell, Iowa, where Donald continued trucking. In 1973, they moved to Graceville, Minnesota. Don was baptized on December 21, 1979 and confirmed on December 30, 1979 at Mt. Olive Lutheran Church in Graceville by Rev. Randall S. Siegel. The couple remained in Graceville until 1988, when they moved to Morris, where they continued to live until the time of Don’s death.




Don was a member of St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Morris. Don enjoyed playing rummy, watching sports, especially the Minnesota Twins and snowmobiling. Over the years he had owned horses and enjoyed spending time with them.




Don died on Wednesday, April 15, 2009 at the St. Cloud Hospital in St. Cloud, Minnesota, having lived to reach the age of 81 years.




He is survived by his wife: Elaine Young of Morris; five sons: Danny Young of Marion, IA, Steven Young (special friend: Britney) of Milbank, SD, Howard (Becky) Johnson of Ottawa, IL, Jerry Johnson of Ottawa, IL and James (Joy) Haukos of Clinton; six daughters: Peggy (Fritz) Lutz of Central City, IA, Julie Ann (Doug) Flickinger of Cedar Rapids, IA, Bonnie Young (David) of Pensacola, FL, Debrah Young of Marion, IA, Debbie Lynn (Jeff) Reetz of Roseland and Lori Ann Young of Morris; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; one brother: Russ (Voloris) Young of Clear Lake, IA; one sister: Carrie Dale Kirshbaum of Rockwell, IA and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife: Dorothy and one brother: Milton Jr and his wife: Ruth.




Pallbearers for the service are: Richard Howe, Tom Gibson, Gerald Kaus, Harold Hanson, Leroy Baxter and Ronnie Coates. Honorary pallbearers are Leroy Dobmeier, Gary Weers and all who called him friend. Phyllis Joos will serve as organist for the service with Sharon Martin serving as soloist. Pedersen Funeral Home in Morris is in charge of the arrangements.
