Dorothy Selland

November 5, 1924 — October 12, 2007

Dorothy Elaine (Welfare) Selland, aged 82, died October 12, 2007 in Merit Care Hospital in Fargo, North Dakota. Dorothy was born November 5, 1924, to Leroy and Olive (Cowden) Welfare in Morris. She graduated from Morris High School and from nursing school in Minneapolis. She married Donald Heise; they farmed in Pleasant Lake, North Dakota, where their son, Michael, was born. They divorced and Dorothy moved to San Diego, California. She married Omar Selland; during his naval assignment to Japan, Dorothy developed a love of the Japanese culture. Upon her return to the United States, Dorothy lived on the West Coast for several years. She returned to Morris in 1975 to care for her parents and to raise her nephews, Dale and Todd Wartman. She worked at the Stevens County Memorial Hospital and loved taking care of "her" babies in the nursery. Her colleagues remember her as some one always willing to pitch in and help wherever needed. After her retirement she remained in Morris until February, 2007, when she moved to Lake Park, MN, where she was cared for by Todd and Emma Wartman until her death.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Leroy and Olive Welfare; her sisters: Florence (LeRoy "Butch") Wartman and Shirley (Art) Stambaugh and her ex-husband, Omar Selland. She is survived by her son, Michael (Cheryl) Heise of Kirkland of Washington; ex-husband, Donald Heise of Rugby, ND; her sister, Mary (Emmett) Bergman of Ithaca, NY; nephews, Dale (Caron) Wartman of Atwater and Todd "TJ" (Emma) Wartman of Lake Park; niece, Judy Wartman (Mike) Blair of Anchorage, AK and numerous much loved nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, grand-nephews, cousins, nursing colleagues and special friends.

In gratitude for the loving care given to Dorothy by the Red River Valley Hospice team of Detroit Lakes, her family requests that memorial contributions be directed to that group or to the Hospice nearest the donor.

Serving as Urn bearer for the service is: Todd "TJ" Wartman. Deb Mahoney will serve as organist for the service. Pedersen Funeral Home in Morris is in charge of the arrangements.
