Eugene John Schmidt, son of Henry Peter and Mary Anna (VanKempen) Schmidt, was born February 26, 1913 in Hodges Township, near Morris, Minnesota. He grew up in the Morris area, where he attended St. Mary?s School for 1st and 2nd grade. He continued his schooling through the 8th grade at the District #8 School in Hodges Township. Eugene became very educated by continued reading throughout his life. He became proficient in welding, carpentry, electrician work, engine mechanics and was able to repair almost anything. He was united in marriage to Mary Helen Daily on June 29, 1944 at Assumption Church in Morris. Following their marriage, the couple farmed east of Morris, where they remained until moving into Morris in 1997. On April 1, 2000, they moved to LaCrosse, WI because the dialysis unit in Morris closed, which also allowed them to be closer to their son.
