Grace Nelson

September 13, 1914 — January 27, 2010

Grace Iola Thone, daughter of Adolph and Emma (Now) Thone, was born September 13, 1914 in Rolling Forks Township in Pope County Minnesota. She was baptized and confirmed in Rolling Forks. Grace received her schooling at School District #38 in Pope County and School District #13 in Swift County . On September 4, 1937 she was united in marriage to Leonard Nelson at Rolling Forks Lutheran Church . Following their marriage the couple made their home in Rolling Forks Township , where they farmed and raised their son, Lyle. Together she and Leonard farmed together for many years. Following Leonard’s death in September of 1968, Grace moved to Starbuck and worked at Nodlund’s Café and the Starbuck Variety Store. Grace moved into the Minnewaska Lutheran Home where she continued to live until the time of her death.





Grace was a member of Shepherd of the Hills Church in Swift Falls , Minnesota , where she was very active with the Women’s ELCA. She also served on the Minnewaska Lutheran Home Auxiliary, Senior Volunteer Program and the Hospital Auxiliary. Grace also enjoyed gardening, sewing and quilting.





Grace passed away on Wednesday, January 27, 2010 at the Minnewaska Lutheran Home in Starbuck , MN , having lived to reach the age of 95 years.





Grace is survived by her son: Lyle (Rebecca) Nelson of Alexandria; three grandchildren Gina (Stewart) Hansen of Orono, Beth (Troy) Anderson of Long Lake and Collin Nelson of Alexandria and five great grandchildren: Lauren, Alexandra and Jordan Hansen and Shea and Drew Anderson. She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents and siblings: Verna Syverson, Mariette Syverson, Art Thone and an infant brother.





Pallbearers for the service are: Kevin Syverson, Randy Syverson, Jeff Syverson, Orlie Brecht, David Gregerson and Sanford Olson. Honorary pallbearers are: Orin Syverson and Staff at the Minnewaska Lutheran Home in Starbuck. Stephanie Smith will provide music for the service. Starbuck Funeral Home in Starbuck is in charge of the arrangements.
