Gudrun Tangen

Funeral services for Gudrun Tangen of Starbuck, Minnesota will be held Saturday, April 12, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church, Cyrus. Minister Minette Stalheim Johnson will be officiating. Visitation will be held for one hour prior to services at the church on Saturday. Burial will be in Cyrus South Cemetery, Cyrus.

Gudrun Valtinson, daughter of Olaus "Ben" and Margit (Sjong) Valtinson, was born on August 10, 1920 in Finley, North Dakota. A few years later the family moved to Grand Rapids, Minnesota where Gudrun lived until she graduated from high school in 1940. Shortly after graduation she moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota where she worked at a variety of places including munition plants, J.B. McClintok Company, and Gamble Skogmo. On February 4, 1949 she married Lewis Tangen and the couple moved to Cyrus, Minnesota. Lewis died in 2003. Gudrun continued to live in Cyrus until entering the Minnewaska Lutheran Home in 2009. The couple had one daughter, Margaret "Peggy".

During Gudrun's years in Cyrus she was active in both the St. John's Lutheran Church of rural Starbuck and Trinity Lutheran Church of Cyrus. She was also active in the Legion Women's Auxillary. In the 1970's and the 1980's she became well known as a very good nanny and worked for several families in the Cyrus/Morris area.

Gudrun died on Tuesday, January 14, 2014 at the Minnewaska Lutheran Home in Starbuck, having lived to reach the age of 93 years.

She is survived by her daughter, Peggy (Robert) Block of Alexandria, Minnesota; grandson, Michael (Amy) Block of St. Francis, Minnesota; granddaughter, Sarah (Jason) Deel of Durant, Oklahoma; three great-grandsons, Jarid, Logan, and Isaac of St. Francis, Minnesota and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; two sisters, Connie Mertes and Orpha Valtinson; one brother, Marvin Valtinson, one sister-in-law, Helen Valtinson and one brother-in-law, Kenneth Mertes, Sr.

Diane Hanse will serve as organist for the service with Sheryle Dahl serving as soloist.

In lieu of flowers, the family wishes memorials are given to the Minnewaska Lutheran Home.

Starbuck Funeral Home in Starbuck is in charge of the funeral arrangements.
