Helen Smith

Helen Aileen Treischel, daughter of Emil and Mable (Paddock) Treischel, was born February 10, 1919 in Iroquois County, Illinois. Helen grew up and received her schooling in Minnesota and Illinois, eventually graduating from Alberta High School in Alberta, Minnesota. Following her graduation, she continued to live and work in the Alberta and Morris areas. On April 15, 1944, she was united in marriage to Grant Smith in Morris, Minnesota. The couple lived and farmed in the Stevens County area, and in 1956, they bought the farm they are currently living on near Donnelly.




Helen was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Donnelly, where she was active in the quilting group and WELCA. She enjoyed reading, quilting, crossword puzzles, word searches and loved eating chocolate.




Helen died on Tuesday, September 9, 2008 at the Stevens Community Medical Center in Morris, Minnesota, having lived to reach the age of 89 years.




She is survived by her husband: Grant Smith of Donnelly; two daughters: Lola Smith of Donnelly and Sylvia (Ron) McHone of Crystal Lake, IL; one son: Sidney (Mary) Smith of Westminster, MD; seven grandchildren: Charlene (Paul) LaGrange, David Hilbrand (Shannon Lien), Paul Hilbrand (Tammy Lusher), Benjamin (Kayc) McHone, Nathan McHone, Stephanie McHone and Eric (Aimee) Smith and ten great-grandchildren: Andrew LaGrange, William LaGrange, Ashlyn Stephenson, Sean Lien, Nacole, Katlyn and Samantha Hilbrand and Keagen, Avery and Grant Smith. She was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters: Mary Smith and Lola Treischel.




Pallbearers for the service are: David Hilbrand, Paul Hilbrand, Benjamin McHone, Nathan McHone, Eric Smith and Steven Smith. Sue Erdahl-Nelson will serve as organist for the service with Mary Huebner serving as soloist. Pedersen Funeral Home in Morris is in charge of the arrangements.
