Hulda Fischbach

May 30, 1910 — November 14, 2005

Hulda Anna Trantow, daughter of Emil and Emilie (Block) Trantow, was born May 30, 1910 in the original log cabin that had been incorporated into the new house built around it, in Swan Lake Township, Stevens County, Minnesota. She was baptized and confirmed by Reverend Gustav Pilgrim. Hulda attended grade school at District #34 and in 1928 she graduated from the West Central School of Agriculture. She continued her education at the St. Cloud Business School. Following her education, she took a position at the Pilon Hospital in Paynesville, MN, where she was a receptionist and bookkeeper and this was where she met her future husband, Louis. The couple was united in marriage on September 23, 1930 at St. Louis Catholic Church in Paynesville. To this union three children were born, Eugene, Marlene and Kenneth. The couple remained in Paynesville until 1945, when they moved to Seattle, WA, where Louis worked as an interpreter for German war prisoners. Hulda's father died in 1946 and the couple returned to the Morris area and moved to the new farm site that Emil had built. They remained on the farm until 1975, when they moved to Morris. The couple shared a loving and happy home together for 63 years. Louis died in December of 1993. Hulda continued to live in her home until April, 2001 and then moved to West Central Home in Morris. She eventually moved to an assisted living home in Alexandria. In August, 2005 she moved to the Knute Nelson Home in Alexandria, where she passed away peacefully on Monday, November 14, having lived to reach the age of 95 years.

Hulda was a very gentle person. The employees at the assisted living said she had a calming influence on the other residents and she never complained. She was 94 years old before her family knew she hated peas. She loved embroidery, cooking and sharing time with friends and family. She especially enjoyed walking with her dear friend, Dorothy Balluff. Hulda was a willing caretaker and actively participated in church activities.

She is survived by three children: Eugene (Violetta) Fischbach of Fremont, NE, Marlene (Merrill) Pedersen of Alexandria, MN and Kenneth (Laurie) Fischbach of Cabot, AR, 5 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; brother and wife: Alvin and Elsie Trantow and two sisters and their husbands: Olga and Rudolph Abel and Laura and Clarence Timm.
