Lyle Walker

December 25, 1911 — April 28, 2008

Lyle Richard Walker, son of Robert and Elma (Clark) Walker, was born on December 25, 1911 in Morris Township, in Stevens County, Minnesota. He was baptized on September 25, 1949 at the Cyrus Lutheran Church in Cyrus, Minnesota by Reverend L. M. Osness. Lyle attended country school and dropped out at the age of 15 to help out on the farm. He always wanted to be a Civil Engineer and so when a couple friends came home from CC Camp and were talking about how good it was Lyle joined up. "My Pa drove me into town and I got on the train at Midnight and it took me to Fort Snelling and from there I rode the train to Houston, MN. I got $5.00 a month and my parents were sent $25.00 a month. I also received my clothes, board and room, Dr. and Dentist benefits and got to go to school while at Camp. I served in the CC Camp till August 1, 1937." On November 1, 1939, he was united in marriage to Janice Barringer at the Federated Church Parsonage in Morris, Minnesota, by Reverend Charles S. Sowder. To this union five children were born. The couple farmed in the Morris area for three years, before buying a farm southwest of Cyrus in the fall of 1942. Following their retirement, they moved into Cyrus and enjoyed spending 18 winters in Arizona. Janice passed away on December 24, 2003. Lyle continued to live in Cyrus until February, 2007.

Lyle loved living on the farm. He enjoyed hunting, trapping and fishing and his dogs. He was known for his beautiful woodworking. When Lyle's grandchildren were married, he would make the stand that the unity candle stood on. He was an avid gardener in his retiring years and was especially fond of his roses. Lyle was also a wonderful cook and quick to offer advice on "just how to prepare it." He amazed us all when he wanted a computer and enjoyed looking up interesting things and e-mailing his kids and grandchildren, nieces and nephews. All who knew him marveled at his good memory as he told many stories of his childhood. He was very interested in people and when he greeted them his handshake was strong and firm. His faith meant much to him and he wasn't afraid to ask you to pray with him. These last few months he had been looking forward to "going home."

Lyle passed away at Mapleton Community Home in Mapleton, Minnesota on April 28, 2008, where he had been a resident since February 5th. Lyle lived to reach the age of 96 years.

He is survived by his children: Karen (Harvard) Jaeck of Mapleton, MN, Darlene (Craig) Solvie of Beulah, WY and Richard (Mary) Walker of Hancock, MN; 22 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; sister: Hazel (Walker) Christianson of Madras, OR and brother: Howard (Edna) Walker of Baldwin, WI. He was preceded in death by his wife, Janice; his parents; one daughter: Elma Mae; one son: Charles Roy; one granddaughter: Lillian April Solvie; one great-granddaughter; Katlee Marie Jaeck; two sisters: Laura (Walker) McCollar and Ada (Walker) Marquardt and one brother: Robert Walker.
