Marilyn Horning

Marilyn Louise Carlson, daughter of John and Myrtle (Hatrick) Carlson, was born June 9, 1934 in Danielson Township in Meeker County, Minnesota. She was baptized at First Lutheran Church in Cosmos, MN by J. Gottrid Larson and on May 22, 1949 was confirmed at Bethany Lutheran Church in Minneapolis by Pastor Arthur Knock. She grew up and began her schooling in Cosmos and later attended Minnehaha Academy High School, where she graduated in 1952. She continued her education at Bethesda School of Nursing in St. Paul, where she graduated in 1956, with an R.N Degree. On December 8, 1956 she was united in marriage to Donald J. Horning in Loveland, Colorado. Following their marriage, the couple made their home in the Herman area, where Marilyn worked at the Wheaton, MN hospital for one year. She later began working as a school nurse at the Herman Community School for ten years.



Marilyn was a member of Bethel Lutheran Church in Herman, where she was active as a Sunday school teacher, leader, organist, choirs and the women?s groups. She was also very active with numerous health organizations, such as, The American Red Cross and The American Cancer Society of Grant County. She was a member of the Busy Bee Homemakers and was a leader of the Eldorado 4-H Club. Marilyn enjoyed quilting, flower gardening, sewing and caring for and helping others. She especially enjoyed spending time with her family and writing family histories.



Marilyn died on Saturday, May 6, 2006 at the SCMC Courage Cottage in Morris after battling cancer for over 16 years. She lived to reach the age of 71 years.



She is survived by her husband: Donald Horning of Herman; five children: David (Ardy) Horning of Alexandria, Karen (Mark) Graf of Alexandria, Robert (Mary) Horning of Savage, Paul (Deann) Horning of Clancy, MT and Lisa Horning of Olympia, WA; daughter-in-law: Luanne Horning of Herman; 13 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one brother: Jon (Linda) Carlson of Fort Collins, CO and one sister-in-law: Audrey Carlson of Mayer. She was preceded in death by her parents; step-mother: Hilda and brother: Lloyd and one infant brother.



Pallbearers for the service are Marilyn's grandchildren: Nicole Rupert, Becky Blaisdell, Anna Horning, Bradley Horning, Adam Graf, Eric Graf, Krista Horning, Elisa Horning, Andrew Horning, Daniel Horning, Lindsey Horning, Justin Horning and Matthew Robeson. Kathy Rotvold will serve as organist for the service with the Bethel Choir providing special music. Pedersen Funeral Home in Morris is in charge of the arrangements.



The family prefers memorials to the SCMC Courage Cottage, the American Cancer Society or the Douglas County Chapter of the American Red Cross for Grant County Residents.
