She continued her education at Augsburg College and later graduated from St. Cloud State Teaching College. Following her schooling, Marlys taught 2nd grade for one year in Hinckley, MN, before moving to Morris and teaching grade school for one year. On June 20, 1953, she was united in marriage to Wallace Giese at Emmanuel Lutheran Church. Following their marriage, Marlys became a full time mother, homemaker and partner in the farming operation with Wally. From 1953 to 1958, the couple lived and worked on the family farm in Rendsville Township, before purchasing their own farm in Macsville Township in Grant County, where they continued to live and farm. In 1990, they built a new home on lower Pomme de Terre Lake. For four years, Wally did an excellent job caring for Marlys with the help of their children and grandchildren. In 2013, the family met Juana Garcia, who became the fulltime caregiver to Marlys (and Wally). Marlys moved to Peaceful Bliss Assisted Living Alzheimer's Wing in Alexandria, MN, In May of 2014, where she continued to live until the time of her death.
