Marvin Braaten

Funeral services for Marvin Braaten of Starbuck, MN will be held Saturday, February 15, 2014 at 1:30 p.m. at East Zion Lutheran Church in Starbuck, MN. Reverend Jackie Harvestine will be officiating. Visitation will be held Friday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Starbuck Funeral Home in Starbuck and for one hour prior to services at the church on Saturday. Burial will be in East Zion Lutheran Cemetery. Military Rites will be provided by Starbuck V.F.W.

Marvin Kenneth Braaten, son of Anders "Andrew" and Julia (Berg) Braaten, was born July 25, 1925 on the family farm in Rolling Forks Township in Pope County. He attended country school, before graduating from Starbuck High School in 1943. After graduating, he helped out on the family farm until he was drafted into the army in November 1945. After basic training he was sent to Japan and was discharged in February 1947.

Upon returning from Japan, Marvin worked at Haldorson Hardware in Glenwood, and after farming with his brother, Palmer, for a few years he moved down to the Twin Cities. He was then employed at several businesses including Archer Daniel Midland Company, Twin City Arsenol, and The Ford Motor Company. On August 16, 1952, Marvin was united in marriage to Donna Erickson at West Zion Lutheran Church. The couple bought the family farm in 1954, where they continued to farm for 33 years until Marvin's retirement in 1987.

Marvin was also involved in many organizations for several years including Rolling Forks Town Board as a clerk, Church Council for several offices, and the Farmers Union Board of Directors for 14 years.

Marvin died on Wednesday, February 12, 2014 at Minnewaska Lutheran Home in Starbuck, MN. He lived to reach the age of 88 years.

He is survived by his wife: Donna Braaten of Starbuck; two daughters: Linda (Ryan) Jackson of Starbuck and Connie (Rodney) Hauer of Sartell; one sister: Alma Bratlien of College Station, TX; five grandchildren: Mitchell Jackson, Amber Jackson, Cory Jackson, Justin Hauer, and Kayla Hauer. He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister: Mabel and five brothers: Clarence, Palmer, Lloyd, Franklin, and Claremont.

Starbuck Funeral Home in Starbuck is in charge of the arrangements.
