Marvin Thorson

Marvin Alford Thorson, son of Alfred and Syverina (Mallum) Thorson, was born June 26, 1922 in Rolling Forks Township in Pope County, Minnesota. He was baptized and confirmed at East Zion Lutheran Church of rural Starbuck. Marvin grew up in Rolling Forks and Langhei Townships and attended country school in district 62. He was united in marriage on August 31, 1944 to Evelyn Lee in Minneapolis by Rev. J.W. Ylvisaker. Marvin farmed south of Benson, until 1951 then rural Starbuck from 1951 until 1966. During that time from 1953 to the early 1960's he also was a quality field inspector for Land O Lakes. In the mid 60's through the early 70's he was heavy equipment operator doing road construction. Marvin worked many years on the construction of Interstates 94 and 90. In his later years he drove truck for Cenex in Benson until he retired. Marvin and Evie lived on their farm in Langhei Township from 1951 to 2001. They lived in Benson until June 2003. The couple moved into Starbuck in July 2003 when Evie moved into the Minnewaska Lutheran Home. Marvin resided at the Minnewaska Apts. until June 2007. He then lived with his daughter Kristi and family in rural Glenwood until entering the Minnewaska Lutheran Home in October 2007. Marvin was a life member of East Zion Lutheran Church and a Teamsters Union member for many years. He loved to go hunting and fishing and enjoyed watching wildlife shows and the news on TV. He liked ballroom dancing and reading, and cherished the time spent visiting with friends and family.

Marvin died on Thursday, December 13, 2007 at the Glacial Ridge Hospital, in Glenwood, MN, having lived to reach the age of 85 years.

He is survived by five children: Connie (Jerry) Wersinger of Benson, Diane (Jim) Haugen of Blaine, Bradley (Barbara) Thorson of Statesville, NC, Jane (Bill) Cross of Blaine, Bryan (Toni) Thorson of Grand Rapids and Kristi (Dale) Carlson of Glenwood; 17 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren and two sisters: Alverna (Wayne) Schumacher of Glenwood and Elaine Espelien of Starbuck. He was preceded in death by his wife: Evelyn; his parents; one brother: Kermit Thorson and numerous brothers and sisters-in-law.

Pallbearers for the service are Marvin's grandsons: Scott Flannigan, Todd Flannigan, Dustin Haugen, Luke Thorson, Brent Wersinger and Bob Hall. Honorary pallbearers are all his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Monica Gosseling will serve as organist and Eric Danielson will be the soloist. Starbuck Funeral Home in Starbuck is in charge of arrangements.
