Melvin Wohlers

Melvin Charles Wohlers, son of Marvin and Veronica (Kruger) Wohlers, was born July 12, 1935 in Graceville, Minnesota, where he grew up and was baptized. He was confirmed in Dumont, MN. Melvin attended Graceville High School, graduating in 1954. He continued his education at the University of Minnesota in the Twin Cities. On October 2, 1953 he enlisted in the United States Army National Guard. On September 21, 1957, he was united in marriage to Connie Cooper in Dumont, MN by Reverend Karel Pecoviek. The couple moved to Morris, where Melvin began working for Willies Super Valu, the Stevens County Auditor, parttime Insurance agent and the Standard Station. Melvin then started working for the Minnesota National Guard as Administrator and Supply Technician. After serving 36 years, 7 months and 17 days in the Army National Guard, Melvin received an honorable discharge on May 18, 1990.



Melvin was a member of Assumption Catholic Church in Morris, Knights of Columbus, Pheasants Forever, Morris after 5 Fishing League, MN Army National Guard and served on the Morris Fire Department for 21 years. Melvin received the Golden Gloves Boxing Champion Welterweight Division Title on January 19, 1955. Melvin enjoyed fishing, baseball, hunting, boxing, coin collecting and country western music. He especially enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. He loved watching his children and grandchildren’s sporting activities.



Melvin died on Monday, July 26, 2010 at the Stevens Community Medical Center in Morris, MN, having lived to reach the age of 75 years.



He is survived by his wife: Connie Wohlers of Morris; four children: Kevin (Sherry) Wohlers of Morris, Diane (Terry) Gregg of Willmar, Doug (Jan) Wohlers of Victoria and Donny (Amy) Wohlers of Morris; 14 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; four brothers: twin brother: Marlus (Donna) Wohlers of Cottage Grove, WI, Roger (Beverly) Wohlers of Cottage Grove, WI, Jerry (Donna) Wohlers of Lakeville and Kenny (Connie) Wohlers of Wendell; two sisters: Sharon (Bob) Melberg of Chokio and Donna (Clarence) Diedrich of Grand Forks, ND and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one great-grandchild: Evan Schwitters; his parents; one sister: Joyce Kleindl and one brother: David Wohlers.



Pallbearers for the service are Melvin’s grandsons: Matt Wohlers, Derek Wohlers, Jared Wohlers, Corey Wohlers, Scot Gregg, Todd Gregg and Brennan Wohlers. Honorary pallbearers are Melvin’s grandchildren: Kayla Erdahl, Staci Wetterling, Toni Schwitters, Bobbi Jo Wohlers, Carly Wohlers, Colton Wohlers and Erin Wohlers. Deb Mahoney will serve as pianist for the service with Ann Nelson serving as soloist. Pedersen Funeral Home in Morris is in charge of the arrangements.
