Norman Hoium

November 15, 1925 — June 26, 2009

Norman Edward Hoium was born November 15, 1925 in Starbuck, Minnesota. His parents were George and Mabel Wesen.  He grew up in Starbuck, where he attended the Starbuck Elementary School and later the Starbuck High School. Following his military service Norman also attended Wahpeton School of Science. He was baptized and confirmed into the Lutheran Faith at Minnewaska Lutheran Church in Starbuck.





In 1942, at the age of 17, Norman entered the U.S. Navy, where he continued his education while serving his country.  While enlisted, Norman served in the South Pacific in the Guam and Guadalcanal campaigns.  Following his honorable discharge in 1945, Norman return to Starbuck and later lived for a few years in California and then moved to Oklahoma in 1953.  While living in Oklahoma, he met Melba Blann, and the couple was united in marriage on June 4, 1955.  Following their marriage, they decided to make their home in Starbuck.  While living in Starbuck, Norman worked for Nodland Construction for a few years before taking a job at the Starbuck Creamery.  He worked as the local milkman for the next 17 years.  Norman has continued to live in Starbuck, most recently as a resident of the Minnewaska Lutheran Home.




Norman was a long-time member of the Minnewaska Lutheran Church and the Starbuck VFW.  He was also a very avid golfer, a great Vikings and Twins fan and he loved to cheer on any local sports team.  Most of all, Norman loved the time he was able to spend with his family, especially when it involved his two grandchildren.




Norman died on Friday, June 26, 2009 at the Minnewaska Lutheran Home in Starbuck.  He had lived to reach the age of 83 years.




He is survived by his wife, Melba Hoium of Starbuck; one daughter: Deborah Hoium Nish and husband, Terrence Nish of Anaheim Hills, CA; two grandchildren: Megan Barrera-Palma and Matthew Andersen, both of Anaheim Hills, CA; one great-granddaughter: Marissa Palma of Anaheim Hills, CA; one brother: Richard (Kathy) Wesen of Blaine and one sister: Nancy (Tony Sr.) Janu of Starbuck.  He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers: Donald & Gerald Wesen.




Pallbearers for the service are: Mary Baukol, Don Hansen, Tony Janu Sr., Frances Moen, Alek Overson, Rick Ronnie, Doug Staples and Virgil Tollakson. Serving as organist is Shari Opdahl. Starbuck Funeral Home in Starbuck is in charge of the arrangements.
