Orin Syverson

January 17, 1917 — May 6, 2011

Funeral services for Orin Syverson of Starbuck will be held Tuesday, May 10, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at East Zion Lutheran Church, rural Starbuck. Visitation will be held Monday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Starbuck Funeral Home in Starbuck and for one hour prior to services at the church on Tuesday. Burial will be in Rolling Forks Cemetery.

Orin Sylvester Syverson was born on January 17, 1917 at home in Pope County to Carl and Clara (Dokkebakken) Syverson. He was baptized at East Zion Lutheran Church and confirmed there in 1931.

He went to country school and farmed until he entered the army in February 1942. He served on the Pacific front and was honorably discharged in September of 1945. He returned home and resumed farming.

Orin married Mariette Thone on June 28, 1947. They bought the Syverson home place in 1949 from his uncles and farmed there until they retired in 1992. He enjoyed farming, raising beef cattle, hogs and chickens. On a beautiful sunny summer day, you could find Orin out on the pontoon, with the rest of the family, catching pan fish or perhaps out in the yard making sure to get the tree swing hung just right for the anxious grandkids. In the cold of winter, he would hide in the basement doing some wood-working projects like making stepstools for the grandchildren and Christmas wreaths. He also helped Mariette make Christmas ornaments for the grandkids. Orin was a member of East Zion Church and a life member of the Starbuck VFW post. After Mariette died in 2000, he enjoyed helping set tables and clean up after meals at the Senior Citizen Center. Whether he was mowing someone else's lawn, planting and picking in the garden or climbing to the top of the tallest tree at the age of 80, Orin never liked to slow down. He loved to share his passion for flowers, namely the red dahlia, and his special raspberry jam. He never ran out of either!

Orin moved to Holly Ridge Manor in September of 2010 and then to the Minnewaska Lutheran Home in April 2011. He passed away on Friday, May 6, at the age of 94. He was a loving father, grandfather and great-grandfather and will be missed by all.

Orin is survived by his daughters, Lois (Orlie) Brecht of Starbuck; Wanda (Ron) Martinson of Falls Church, Virginia; daughter-in-law, Diane (Jerry) Butenhoff of Barnesville; grandchildren: Anthony (Cherrie) Brecht, Nathan (Carrie) Brecht, Jodi (Mike) Blair, Robert Martinson, Mary (Greg) Mullan, Wayne Syverson (Sarah Scheel), Renee (Ryan) Gilsrud, Brett (Tabitha) Syverson, Derek Syverson (Jamie Christianson); great-grandchildren: Whitney, Jordon, Brooklyn and Tony Brecht; Bailey, Brady and Bethany Brecht; Tyler, Cole, Thomas and Isabella Blair; Keira Syverson, Osmund Syverson; one sister, Beatrice Hoverson, and several nieces and nephews

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Mariette; son Terry; brother LeVern and an infant brother; sisters-in-law, Verna Syverson and Grace Nelson; brothers-in-law, Art Thone, Jerry Hoverson and Leonard Nelson; nephew, Dennis Hoverson.
