Roy Lucken

March 12, 1913 — May 29, 2006

Roy Alfred Lucken, son of Ole and Mabel (Hoselton) Lucken, was born March 12, 1913 in St. Thomas, Pembina County, North Dakota. He was baptized and confirmed as an adult on April 22, 1956 at St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Morris by Reverend H. C. Duehlmeier. Roy grew up in the Blackduck and Thief River Falls area and attended country school through the 8th grade at Kratka, MN. He worked for the Fargo-Detroit Ice Company for eight years. On June 25, 1938, he was united in marriage to Florence Ritter in Detroit Lakes by Pastor Ralph Erickson. The couple moved to Detroit, Michigan, where Roy worked for the Coca-Cola plant, before entering the Army on April 1, 1943. He served in Europe with the 263rd Infantry Regiment, 66th Black Panther Division. He received an honorable discharge on February 11, 1946. Following his discharge, Roy bought the Morris Ice Business and on August 14, 1946, he and Florence moved from Fargo to Morris. Roy ran the ice business until 1975. In 1947, he leased a gas station on 5th and Atlantic, which he later bought and renamed Lucken's Mobil. On February 15, 1951, Roy bought the Morris Cab Company from Laurel Smith. He used the Mobil station as his headquarters to run the business. In 1970, he added bulk fuel delivery and Triple A service. Roy sold the station in 1978 to his son Rick and in 1982 sold the bulk delivery to him. During his "retirement" Roy bucked snow for about 40 customers for as long as he was able.

Roy was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Morris, where he served as trustee for 20 years. He was a life member of the American Legion and VFW. He served on the city council for 24 years and was a volunteer fireman on the Morris Fire Department for 32 years. Roy enjoyed fishing, Don's CafAsh, playing cards, square dancing, bowling, reading, watching sports on TV and driving around town and the countryside. He especially enjoyed the time he spent with his family and friends.
