Ruth Domingo

Ruth Frieda (Piepenburg, Dahl) Domingo, age 90, died on October 31, 2006, Reformation Day, at West Wind Village in Morris, Minnesota. Ruth was born on February 4, 1916, in Horton Township, Stevens County, Minnesota, the daughter of Albert and Frieda Piepenburg. She was baptized by her maternal grandfather, the Reverend F.E. Pasche, on February 11, at Zion Lutheran Church. She was confirmed there on May 26, 1929, by the Reverend C.W. Ristow.



Ruth graduated from the 8th grade in District 41 in 1928 and then graduated from Morris High School in 1933. She attended one year at the Teacher Training Department in Appleton in 1936 and began her teaching career. She taught in District 29 from 1936-38 and then in District 41 from 1938-40.



Ruth married Olaf S. Dahl on June 6, 1940, at Zion Lutheran Church. They moved to the Dahl home farm in Lac Qui Parle County and farmed there for three years. In 1943 they moved to Ruth's grandparent's farm and farmed there for many years while raising their five children.



Ruth resumed her teaching career after her husband, Olaf, died on January 20, 1958. Teaching was her greatest passion and she had a real heart for Special Education children. She taught four years back in District 41. In 1962 she began to teach first grade at the Morris Elementary School. She taught in Morris for sixteen years before retiring in 1978. Ruth attended the University of Minnesota and attained her Bachelor of Science Degree in 1967.



On November 26, 1970, Ruth married Clifford Domingo. Her oldest son, Rev. David Dahl, officiated at the marriage in his parish, St. Paul's Lutheran Church, at St. Thomas, North Dakota. Cliff died on July 14, 2003.



Ruth was very active in her church. She served on the Minnesota North District Board of the Women's Missionary League. She was Regional Vice-President of Lakeland II until 1982. She taught Sunday school for twenty-seven years at Zion Lutheran and was a member of Women of Zion her whole adult life. Ruth directed the church choir for twelve years. She served as church librarian. She made many banners and also served on the Horton Cemetery Committee.



Ruth wrote family histories and journals, translated articles and letters from German into English, and organized the book, "Syrup Pail & Overshoes," for the Stevens County Historical Society in 1988. Ruth enjoyed oil painting, embroidery, crocheting, tatting, knitting and playing the piano.



She is survived by five children: Rev. David Dahl (Karen) of Cortez, CO, Duane Dahl (Carol) of North Pole, AK, Sharon Allen (Bill) of Palmer, AK, Rosemary (Penny) Warnke (John) of North Pole, AK and Rev. Ruthann (Mitzi) Miyamoto (Bud) of LaCrosse, WI; a step-son: George Domingo (Pat) of Livonia, MI; 17 grandchildren: Jackie (Jeff) McMurran, Julie (Larry) Engel, Kerry (Jeff) Garrett, Eric (Kristi) Dahl, Greg (Kelly) Dahl, Elizabeth Hursh, Rebecca (Phil) Martinka, Deborah (Corey) Queen, Jon Mavencamp, Tom Mavencamp, Melissa (Colin) Meskell, Dr. Michael (Meredith) Mavencamp, John (Claire) Warnke, Aaron Warnke, Angela Warnke, Chad Miyamoto and Ken (Amy) Miyamoto; two step-grandchildren: Brian and Kevin Domingo; twenty-seven great-grandchildren; three sisters: Dorothea Lind of Las Cruces, NM, Helen (Erwin) Groneberg of Hoffman and Lois Schlieman of Appleton; brother-in-law, Lloyd Thielke and numerous nephews and nieces. She was preceded in death by her parents her husband, Olaf, her second husband, Cliff and her sister, Marion Thielke.



Pallbearers for the service are: Stanley Mumm, Don Munsterman, Paul Groneberg, Eugene Pasche, Neil Thielke and Eric Dahl. Dorothy Maus will serve as organist for the service with Ruth Thielke serving as soloist. Pedersen Funeral Home in Morris is in charge of the arrangements.
