Wilbur Gahm

December 15, 1916 — June 9, 2008

Wilbur DeMars Gahm, eldest child of William F. and Julie (Mahoney) Gahm, was born December 15, 1916 in Framnas Township in Stevens County, Minnesota. He attended grade school at District #14, which was later known as the Stone Schoolhouse. Wilbur graduated from St. Mary's High School in 1934. Following his graduation, he worked for three years on the family farm and for several of his neighbors. Wilbur moved to St. Cloud, where he worked and attended St. Cloud State College for two years. Following his schooling, he returned to Morris and purchased the neighboring farm. He later purchased more land and continued farming and raised and fed out livestock until 1990. Wilbur enjoyed all aspects of farming, gardening and raising flowers.



On December 27, 1969, he was united in marriage to Florence Janousek Eystad and has resided in Morris since then. The couple enjoyed traveling thru quite an area of the United States together. Florence passed away September 11, 2001.



Wilbur was a lifetime member of Assumption Catholic Church in Morris and was active in different phases of the church work, including managing Calvary Cemetery for 18 years; he was a member of the Knights of Columbus since 1940; he was Grand Knight for two years and filled all of the other offices each at least once. Wilbur was a long time director of the Cyrus Farmers Elevator and board president for nine years; he was a member of the local township board and the Morris Livestock Shipping Association. He enjoyed visiting many relatives, coffee times with friends and square dancing during the 1950's and 60's.



Wilbur died on Monday, June 9, 2008 at West Wind Village in Morris, Minnesota, having lived to reach the age of 91 years.



He is survived by two daughters: Karen (Simon) Zeller of Faribault and Layna (Ronald) Rushing of Pomona, CA; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; one sister: Mildred Grabowski of St. Paul and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife: Florence; his parents in the 1970's; two brothers: Charles Gahm and Clarence Gahm; grandson: Tom Zeller; niece: Gretchen Grabowski; two sisters-in-law: Frances Gahm and Barbara Gahm and brother-in-law: Ed Grabowski.



Pallbearers for the service are: Simon Zeller, Bill Gahm, Brad Gahm, Charles Gahm, Neil Gahm and Tom Gahm. Darlene Hennen will serve as pianist for the service with Holly Giese serving as soloist. Pedersen Funeral Home in Morris is in charge of the arrangements.
