David William Day was born on March 20, 1927, in Amboy, Minnesota to Oscar and Luella (Klanke) Day. He grew up in St. Peter and attended school until the early 1940’s when the family moved to North Minneapolis. When David was 17, he enlisted into the United States Navy on January 3, 1945. He spent half of his time in Alaska, half in the Philippines, and was honorably discharged on January 14, 1948. While David was on a leave, he met LaVonne Elliott; the two began dating and were married on October 1, 1949. They made their home in North Minneapolis. David began working at Brix Market in North Minneapolis before his enlistment and returned after his discharge from the Navy. He started as a delivery man, then working the meat counter as a butcher, and lastly in the sausage kitchen. He worked for Brix Market his whole working career, 42 years, retiring in 1985. In 1972, Dave and LaVonne bought a piece of property in Milaca, Minnesota. Eventually, they sold their Minneapolis home and began living there full-time. David commuted to work until his retirement. In 1987, David suffered a major stroke forcing them to move off of their acreage into the town of Milaca; they lived there until 1997 when they moved to Morris. LaVonne died on April 27, 2010. David continued to live independently in Morris until August of 2016 when he moved into West Wind Village where he lived until his death.
David was a member of the Morris American Legion, AmVets, the VFW, First Lutheran Church in Morris and the United Meat Cutters and Butchers of North America Union. He was a major contributor of time and effort to the Boy Scouts. David was the rock of his family; hard-working, powerful, yet, non-confrontational, good natured and very friendly to everyone. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, hobby farming, traveling a little, and most importantly, spending time with his family.
David died on Wednesday, January 2, 2019 at the West Wind Village in Morris; he lived to 91 years old.
