Arland Helberg

Funeral services for Arland Helberg of Kensington, MN will be held Wednesday, February 17, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. at Messiah Lutheran Church in Hoffman. Reverend Nathan Thompson will be officiating. Visitation will be held Tuesday from 4 to 7 p.m. at Pedersen Funeral Home in Morris and for one hour prior to services at the church on Wednesday. Burial will be in Aeneas Lutheran Cemetery in rural Kensington.

Arland Edward Helberg, son of August and Marion (Hood) Helberg, was born September 28, 1937 in Morris, Minnesota. He grew up on the family farm north of Morris. Arland was baptized and confirmed in Aeneas Church, rural Kensington, MN. He attended country school in Swan Lake Township and West Central Agricultural School in Morris. On December 10, 1955, he was united in marriage to Bonnie Mae Kennedy. They spent their entire 60 years of married life on the farm working and raising their five children. The couple dairy farmed for many years as well as operated the Cyrus Locker plant, where Arland enjoyed teaching his children and grandchildren about meat processing. They also joined with Starbuck Iron in the recycling business and later went on to start Countryside Recycling, which they operated for over 10 years continuing until Arland's time of death.

Arland was active in his community and was a member of several different organizations such as: Aeneas Church Council, Kensington School Board, Cyrus Lions Club and White Bear Lake Insurance. Arland lived a very full life. He enjoyed meeting new people, socializing and keeping busy. He always knew someone wherever he went.

Arland enjoyed music, dancing, working in the field, taking care of his cattle and most of all spending time with his family. He spent hours playing cards and games with his children and grandchildren. Arland also played the drums and the accordion in old time music bands traveling around to neighboring communities. His first band, The Dave Rogers Band, was started with his cousins. He was a member of the Cliff Mickelson band for several years. He taught his children to dance and enjoyed dancing with them every opportunity he could.

Arland passed away on Friday, February 12, 2016 at his home in rural Kensington surrounded by his family. He lived to reach the age of 78 years.

He is survived by his wife: Bonnie Mae Helberg of Kensington; children: Edward Helberg (Marie Joseph) of Ogden, UT, Donna Huntley (Virgil Knabe) of Morris, Cindy Helberg of Villard, Scott (Tonya) Helberg of Becker and Sandy Lesmeister of Morris; 12 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Arland is preceded in death by his parents; brother: Glen Helberg; two sisters-in-law: Bonnie Jean Helberg and Byrdella Kennedy and granddaughter: Kolleen Kill.
