Doris Betty Hallauer was born the only child to Henry and Pearl (Ramthun) Just in Milwaukee WI, on August 16, 1923, and was baptized in the name of the Triune God on September 30, 1923, at Grace Ev. Lutheran Church, Milwaukee WI, by the Rev. Carl Gausewitz. She confirmed her baptismal vow before Grace’s altar on May 24, 1936.
Doris received her elementary education at Twenty-First Street and Auer Avenue schools in Milwaukee. Her secondary education was completed at Rufus King High School in 1941. For the next four years she attended Milwaukee Teachers College, graduating in 1945 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Kindergarten-Primary Education.
She began her teaching career in Cunningham School in Beloit WI, and, after one year, continued at Longfellow School in Milwaukee. She was united in marriage with Elton Hallauer on June 17, 1950, at Grace Church, Milwaukee. The couple made their first home in Brighton Township near New Ulm MN, upon her husband’s call to Courtland and Zion Lutheran churches. During her years as a member of Bethel, she served the church as organist and Sunday School teacher. While a resident of Hancock, she served on the Hancock Library Board, as an election judge for many years, and as a kindergarten teacher and substitute teacher on occasion at Hancock Public Schools, all the while fulfilling her duties as mother and homemaker.
The Lord blessed her union of seventy years with Pastor Hallauer with seven daughters, sixteen grandchildren and eighteen great grandchildren. After her husband’s retirement from the ministry, the couple moved into an apartment complex in Morris MN. Since then, she has also resided at The Legacy Assisted Living Center and finally, West Wind Village Nursing Home, both in Morris.
