Dr. Donald Wohlrabe

Dr. Donald Edwin Wohlrabe, son of Dr. E. J. and Eleanor (Clark) Wohlrabe, was born September 30, 1927 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Donald began practicing medicine and surgery in Springfield in 1958. He was associated with his father in offices above the Sward-Kemp Drug Store building. In 1959, the Wohlrabe's opened the Springfield Medical Center on the corner of Maple Street and North Jackson Avenue.



Dr. Wohlrabe is a graduate of Springfield High School, Class of 1944. He attended the University of Minnesota School of Medicine, receiving his medical degree in 1952. He served his internship at Philadelphia General Hospital, Philadelphia, PA. He entered the service in April, 1953, with the U. S. Air Force, as a flight surgeon. He was stationed at Manchester, NH. Upon his discharge in April, 1955, he returned to Minneapolis to complete his residency at the Veterans Administration Hospital and Mt. Sinai Hospital.



In 1958, he received his Master's Degree in Surgery from the University of Minnesota. After his father's retirement in September, 1975, Dr. Wohlrabe continued his practice as physician and surgeon at the Springfield Medical Center, until 1982, when he moved to Morris and continued his practice at Stevens County Hospital.



He was a member of the American College of Surgeons and a certified surgeon by the American Board of Surgery. In 1971 Don received the Merit Award from the Minnesota Academy of Family Physicians. This is a very prestigious award that is given to one outstanding physician each year.



Dr. Wohlrabe served three terms as a member of the Springfield Board of Education, two years as its chairman. He was also a member of Zion Lutheran Church, where he served for many years on the council. Don was a member of the Springfield Jaycees, where he served as Vice President for four years; he received the Outstanding Citizen Award in 1973 and was inducted in the Jaycee "Hall of Fame" in 1985. He also received the WCCO Good Neighbor Award in July, 1972, which honored him for his work on medical economics at a time when many far-reaching proposals for medical care pressured physicians.



Don married Fayelyn Stahn, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Stahn, June 19, 1948. They had three children: Wendy, Julie and David.



Don enjoyed golfing, bible study, carpentry, computers, hunting and fishing. He especially enjoyed the time he spent with his family.



Dr. Donald E. Wohlrabe died on Friday, June 23, 2006 at West Wind Village in Morris, having lived to reach the age of 78 years.



He is survived by his wife: Fayelyn Wohlrabe of Morris; three children: Wendy Wohlrabe Walker of Fayetteville, AR, Julie Lynn Bengtson, Ph.D of Bemidji and David Clark Wohlrabe, DDS of Baudette; seven grandchildren: Chad, Liesl, Blake, Katrina, Jennifer, John and Christopher; three great-grandchildren: Kelsey, Morgan and Gabriella and one brother: Richard C. Wohlrabe of Deer River. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother: Robert G. Wohlrabe, MD.



Pallbearers for the service are: Chad Walker, Blake Walker, John Konecne, Christopher Konecne, Liesl Walker, Katrina Wohlrabe, Jennifer Wohlrabe. Honorary pallbearer is Kelsey Walker. Becki Seidl will serve as organist for the service. Pedersen Funeral Home in Morris is in charge of the arrangements.



In lieu of flowers memorials are preferred to St. Paul?s building fund, American Cancer Society and the American Heart Association.
