Harold Zimmerman

Funeral services for Harold Zimmerman of Becker, MN formerly of Chokio, MN will be held Thursday, February 2, 2017 at 10:30 a.m. at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Chokio, with Reverend Gloria Anderson officiating. Visitation will be Wednesday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Pedersen Funeral Home in Morris and for one hour prior to services at the church on Thursday. Burial will be in Chokio Lutheran Cemetery, rural Chokio.

Harold Arthur Zimmerman, son of Arthur and Martha (Steuck) Zimmerman, was born September 1, 1921 at his parent's home in Baker Township. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Chokio, Minnesota. He attended school in Alberta, graduating Valedictorian of the Alberta High School Class of 1939. Harold continued his education at Concordia College in Moorhead, where he sang with the Concordia Choir. On February 19, 1945, Harold was inducted in the United States Navy; he was honorably discharged on April 19, 1946 in Minneapolis, MN. Following his discharge, he returned to Chokio, where he farmed with his brother, Melvin. On September 18, 1949, he was united in marriage to Mae Lueneburg. Following their marriage they made their home on a farm near Chokio. The couple retired from farming in 1982 and moved into Chokio. Mae preceded Harold in death on October 29, 2005. Harold continued to live in Chokio until October 2011, when he moved into Skyview in Morris and then in October 2012, he moved to Becker, MN to be closer to his daughter.

Harold was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church, where he sang with the church choir for more than 50 years; he served as treasurer, served on church council; was on the call committee and taught Sunday school. He was also a member of the Chokio Legion, serving as Chaplain. Harold served on the Baker Township Board as Treasurer, the Stevens Co. Farmers Union and was active in the DFL Party. Harold was also sexton for the Chokio Lutheran Cemetery for many years. He loved to help others and was always volunteering. Harold and Mae enjoyed traveling, especially their trips to Alaska and Hawaii. They square danced with the Morris B-Squares for many years. Harold enjoyed fishing, as long as the fish were biting and there wasn't work to do. He also enjoyed being around people, playing cards, singing, socializing, playing practical jokes and especially the time spent with his family.

Harold died peacefully surrounded by his family on Sunday, January, 29, 2017 at Quiet Oaks Hospice in St. Augusta, Minnesota. He lived to 95 years.

He is survived by his children: Allan (Marie) Smith of Grand Forks, ND, Faye (Eddie) Pinson of Becker and Boyd (Meridith) Zimmerman of Australia; eight grandchildren: Randy (Cathy) Boe of Morris, Carmen Finger of St. Cloud, Keith (Jackie) Peterson of Lakeville, Vincent Preheim of St. Louis, MO, Terri (Darin) Peterson of East Grand Forks, Traci (Dan) Pind of Hillsboro, ND, James (Emily) Pinson of Otsego and Ryan Pinson of Bloomington; nine great-grandchildren: Jesse Boe, Nathan Finger, Ben Christiansen, Allison (Matthew) Anderson, Michael Peterson, Kaylie Peterson, Devin Peterson and Logan and Kyle Pind and many nieces, nephews and extended family. He was preceded in death by his wife; three children: Dixie Smith, Connie Boe and Leon Smith; his parents; sister: Mabel Vinderslev and brother: Melvin Zimmerman.
