John Gilbert Johnsrud was born on July 21, 1926 in Macsville Township, rural Herman, Minnesota to Roy and Clara (Fehsefeldt) Johnsrud.  He was raised in rural Herman, Minnesota where he attended country school.  At the age of 10, Jackie and his family, moved to the Starbuck area where he continued his schooling at Pope County District #74 until the 8th grade.  Jackie was baptized at Bethal Lutheran Church in Herman and confirmed at St. John’s Lutheran Church in rural Starbuck. Following his schooling, he worked the home farm and for neighboring farmers who he admired and always spoke fondly of.  At the age of 20, he purchased his own farm in White Bear Lake Township, Minnesota.  In 1950, Jackie met Adeline Lundebrek at the Lakeside Ballroom in Glenwood.  The two were married on September 29, 1951 at Lake Hazel Lutheran Church in rural Benson.  Following their marriage, they made their home on the farm in White Bear Lake Township where they started and raised their family.  To this union, six children were born.  Jackie milked dairy cows, raised hogs and crops.  In July of 1994, Jackie and Adeline moved into Starbuck where they resided until his death.

Jackie was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church and most recently Fron Lutheran Church in Starbuck.  He was the Council President at St. John’s, chairman of the board of the Starbuck Creamery, a member of the FHA Board, the Starbuck School Board, and also the Minnewaska Hospital Board of Directors.  Music was an important part of Jackie’s family.  He was an accomplished accordion and piano player, all of which he played by ear.  He played in a band for numerous occasions with his brothers: Kenny and Dicky, Jerry Holten and Herman Engrbretson.  Jackie also loved to visit with family and friends, especially the Sunday afternoon visits with family.  He was a loyal fan of his children and grandchildren attending most of their sporting events in high school and college.  Most importantly, Jackie cherished the time that he was able to spend with his family.
