Marlyn Hagen

July 31, 1929 — January 26, 2017

Marlyn A. Hagen, 87, of Sylmar, California, formerly of Donnelly, Minnesota died on Thursday, January 26, 2017 in Sylmar, California. A graveside service will be held Tuesday, June 13, 2017 at 11:00 at Kongsvinger Lutheran Cemetery near Donnelly, MN.

Marlyn Alvoy Hagen, son of Hans and Hanna Hagen was born on July 31, 1929 in Donnelly, MN. He grew up in Minnesota and worked as a groundskeeper/maintenance person at the Kongsvinger Lutheran Church. Marlys, the love of his life, was also born and raised in MN but moved to CA with her family to escape the brutal winters. They were on summer vacation in MN when a friend of Marlyn's introduced him to Marlys. They became pen pals and were married on September 24, 1955. Marlyn relocated to CA and got a job at Fortin Plastics, where he began his career in tooling. He was very proud of the fact that throughout his working life, he never drew one day of unemployment!

Marlyn was a quiet, soft-spoken man who never said a bad word about anyone. He had a quick wit and a sense of humor that would often surprise people. He enjoyed John Deere tractors, Hummingbirds, NASCAR races, sitting in the backyard in a lawn chair under a shade tree, woodworking, traveling (though Marlys was the driver), and keeping track of rainfall amounts. He was a member of the Elk's Club and the Taggin' Wagon RV club. Marlyn became a gentler, kinder man as the years passed and had a hard time saying no to people. He always had a house full of animals, even though he preferred to live pet-free. In the end, Marlyn became the friend that most friends would love to have.

Marlyn is survived by: one son, Randy Hagen, Lancaster, CA; one daughter, Bobbi Hagen, San Francisco, CA; 8 grandchildren, Jason, Robert, Kristen, Jake, Tyler, Kelsey, Autumn and Delaney; and 5 great-grandchildren, Alexander, Jessica, Sophie, Robert John Jr., and Ronnie. He was preceded in death by his wife, Marlys, one son, Ronald Hagen, his parents, Hans and Hanna and one sister, Helen Dunn.

Pedersen Funeral Home is in charge of the funeral arrangements. An online guest book can be signed at www.pedersenfh.com.
