Funeral services for Melloy Flaten will be held on Saturday, October 14, 2023, at 2:00 p.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church in Cyrus with Reverend Chris Richards officiating. A visitation will be on Friday, October 13, from 5-7:00 p.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church and will continue one hour prior to the services at the church on Saturday. Burial will be at St. Petri Cemetery in Cyrus.
Melloy DeWayne Flaten was born on September 16, 1934, at the Morris Hospital in Morris, Minnesota, to Carl and Ester (Larsen) Flaten. He grew up on the family farm and was baptized and confirmed at St. Petri Lutheran Church. Melloy attended grade and high school, graduating in 1953. During school, he took part in football, basketball, and baseball. Following his schooling, Melloy was the third generation to farm the family farm. He also played on the local softball team. Melloy was united in marriage to Patricia Hennen on December 18, 1993, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Cyrus. They made their home on the farm south of Cyrus. Pat preceded Melloy in death in 2015.
Melloy was a lifelong member of St. Petri Lutheran and Trinity Lutheran Churches; he was active in the church and served as Head Usher. Other interests include: dogs, horses, and cattle; as well as watching Minnesota sports – especially the Minnesota Twins and Gopher Basketball, and playing cards.
Melloy died peacefully on Tuesday, October 10, 2023, at The Legacy in Morris, he was 89 years old.
He is survived by five children: Dean (Lori) Kolden of Montrose, Paul Kolden of Glenwood, Jan (Doug) Wohlers of Victoria, Joe (Carol) Hennen of Audubon and Doug (Tammy) Hennen of Perham; daughter-in-law, Ann Rooney Kolden of Morris; 12 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; one niece Jackie Flaten of Hancock and four nephews: Jason Flaten, Joel (Steph) Flaten, Jeff (Christa) Flaten and Justin (Carrie) Flaten, all of Hancock.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Patricia in 2015; and one brother, Harvey.
