While in WA, Melvin worked at the Boeing plant doing mechanical work, and he continued working in the mechanical field when he returned to MN holding jobs at Hyland Implement, Olson Supply, and Superior Industries in Morris. In addition, he also held various other handyman jobs in and around the Morris area until he retired. After retirement Melvin continued to work as caretaker for the city of
In March of 1974, Melvin joined the American Legion in Morris where he remained an active member and held different positions most recently, chaplain until his death.

He is survived by his true love, Roberta Reynolds; daughter, Teresa Ershbock of Hoffman; daughter, Kimberly (Bill) Bouressa of Cyrus; son, Timothy Heitz of Iowa City, IA; son, Todd Reynolds of Alexandria; daughter, Tammara Heins of Morris; son, Ronald (Christina) Heitz of Monticello; granddaughter, Cassandra (Patrick) Melville of Fargo, ND; granddaughter, Christina (Patrick) Reimers of Chokio; grandson, Riccardo Crader of Cyrus; granddaughter, Kayla Heins of Cyrus; grandson, Steven Heins of Morris; grandson, Brett Bouressa of Cyrus; granddaughter, Lia Carlson of Morris; granddaughter, Haley Heitz of Monticello; granddaughter, Hannah Heitz of Monticello, three great-grandsons, Cody Melville, Elijah Gosch and Fredrick Fechtner; one great-granddaughter, Aryanna Noyes and soon-to-be great-grandchild, baby Reimers; three brothers: Harvey Reynolds of Starbuck, Arthur Reynolds of Cyrus and Richard (Shirley) Reynolds of Morris; two sisters: Estella Hill and Opal Thornberg both of Morris; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Barbara and Don Timmsen of So. St. Paul, Patricia and Richard Dowling of Duluth, Richard and Sue Gimberlin of Morris and Jeanne Gimberlin of Morris as well as many nieces, nephews and others who called him friend. He is preceded in death by his daughter, Tina; his parents, two brothers, two sisters and various nieces and nephews.
Serving as pallbearers for the service are: Morris American Legion, VFW and AmVets. Diane Hanse will serve as organist for the service. Pedersen Funeral Home in Morris is in charge of the arrangements.
