Marjorie Berget

Memorial services for Marjorie Berget of Morris, MN formerly of Hancock, MN will be Thursday, June 13, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. at St. John's Lutheran Church in Hancock, with Reverend Bruce Hanneman officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the church on Thursday. Burial will be in Lakeside Cemetery in Hancock.

Marjorie was born on November 24, 1930 in Moore Township, Stevens County, Minnesota to Alfred A. and Anna M. (Boettcher) Toop.  She was baptized on December 21, 1931 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Hancock by Pastor Hempeck and confirmed on June 4, 1944 by Pastor Duehlmeier.  Marjorie attended country school until 8th grade; she then went one year at Hancock Public Schools before attending Martin Luther Prep School in New Ulm where she graduated.  Following her schooling, she moved back to Hancock and began working at the Hancock Creamery, candling eggs.  While working there, she met Orville “Curly” Berget, who was a butter maker; the two began dating and were married on December 29, 1950 at the St. John’s Lutheran Church Parsonage.  To this union, six children – four girls and two boys were born. Marjorie held other jobs, including: delivering milk while at the Hancock Creamery, Fehr’s Locker in the 70’s, Fingerhut, she managed the VFW, and lastly was a caregiver at PCS in both Morris and Hancock.  Curly preceded Marjorie in death in 2000. Marjorie continued to live on the homeplace until 2015 when she moved into the Walnut Court Apartments in Hancock and then in 2017, she became a resident of West Wind Village where she resided until her death.

Marjorie was the longest member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Hancock.  She taught Sunday school for over 28 years.  She was also the secretary for the Hancock Orphans and the Pomme de Terre leagues for over 20 years.  Marjorie was a big sports fan, following the Minnesota Twins and Minnesota Vikings.  She enjoyed playing cards with her card club; she was an avid reader – especially Louis L’Amour westerns; and spending most every Sunday afternoon with her family at her home.  She cherished the time that she was able to spend with her children and grandchildren.

Marjorie died on Sunday, June 9, 2019 at West Wind Village in Morris, MN. She was 88 years old.

Marjorie is survived by one son: Kyle (Karen) Berget of Morris; four daughters: Ramona (Dean) Rohloff of Hancock, Dorinda (Marty) Thielke of Holloway, Chrysta (Tom) Wente of Holloway and Tawnia (John) Jepma of Hancock; daughter-in-law: Stephanie Berget of Hancock; 14 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; two sisters: Marion Ruplinger of Willmar and Doretta Gorder of Wahpeton, ND; two sisters-in-law: Sharon Toop of Castleton, ND and Marilue Toop of Glenwood; and many nieces and nephews.  She is preceded in death by her husband, Orville “Curly” Berget; son, Kerry Berget; three brothers, Allen “Shorty” Toop, Norm Toop, and Ken Toop; one sister, Bernice Anderson; and brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.
