Marlys Wilma Flaten, daughter of Theodore and Alma (Lagred) Flaten, was born on August 18, 1927 in Langei Township.  She was baptized by Reverend G.G. Bieto at Rolling Forks Church.  She was confirmed by Reverend Ruhne.  The family lived near Swift Falls where she attended District 13 country school. In 1940 the family purchased a farm south of Starbuck and she graduated from Starbuck High School in 1945. She received her teaching degree by attending the Normal Teaching Class in Glenwood as well as earning extra credits attending St. Cloud off campus courses. Following her schooling, she moved to Minneapolis where she was employed by the Republican Finance Committee for eight years.  On February 1, 1957, she was united in marriage to Tom Hagert at Central Lutheran church by Reverend Gornityka. They continued to live in Minneapolis for some time, and later purchased a home in Hamel.  When the children became of school age, they purchased a home in Wayzata. She was employed at General Mills. In 1969, they purchased “The Produce” and moved back to Starbuck.  She was employed as the activity director at Minnewaska Lutheran Home for many years and a nurse’s aide at the Glenwood Retirement Village.  In 1982, she was employed at the Starbuck Elementary School as a Sign Language Aide.  She retired in 1989, but after Tom’s passing, she chose to go back to school as a Foster Grandparent until 2011.  She continued to live in Starbuck at Holly Ridge until March of 2019 when she became a resident at the Glenwood Retirement village where she continued to live until the time of her death.

She was a member of Fron Lutheran Church where she was a Sunday school teacher for many years. She was also a member and officer of the Starbuck V.F.W. Ladies Auxiliary.  She owned her own crafting business, Night Owl Crafts, and enjoyed crafting shows.  Most of all she cherished the time she had with her family and friends.

Marlys passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Thursday, November 7, 2019 at the Glenwood Retirement Village in Glenwood.  She was 92 years old.

She is survived by five children: Gordy (Patrice) Hagert of Glenwood, Marcia Hagert of Fargo, ND, Ted (Margaret) Hagert of Starbuck, Helen (Jim) Layman of Medford, MA and Bob (Julie) Hagert of Idaho Falls, ID; 10 grandchildren: Travis (fiancé: Kate) Hagert, Brittany (Bryan) Smith, Casey (Hope) Hagert, Hank Cautin, Stephen Held, Daniel Held, Hannah (Sean) Austin, Jay Hagert, Jonathan Layman and Andrew Layman; 14 great-grandchildren: Eli, Graham, Isla, Tucker, Jackson, Benjamin, Kristina, Jade, Jason, Mary Elizabeth, Ethan, Miles and Quinn; three sisters-in-law: Marlys Flaten of Glenwood, Joan Oyaas of Minnetonka and Betty (Ron) Wilhelmson of Richfield as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Tom; her parents; sister: Gladys Ronnie and brothers: Arvid and Luverne Flaten.
