Willis Volker

A visitation for Willis D. Volker of Herman, Minnesota will be held Saturday, May 3, 2014 from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. at the Pedersen Funeral Home in Morris.
Willis D. Volker, son of Willard "Buff" and Sylvia (Freeman) Volker, was born July 22, 1951 in Morris, Minnesota. He grew up in Herman, where he was baptized and confirmed at Bethel Lutheran Church. Willis graduated in 1969 from Herman-Norcross Community Schools. Following his schooling, he went to basic training with the National Guards, Appleton Unit. He served in the Guards for seven years before being honorably discharged. On April 15, 1972, he was united in marriage to Roberta VanZomeren at the United Methodist Church in Herman. To this union three children were born. Willis worked at the Herman Market after the Guards until 1980, when he began farming and milking cows. He sold "the girls" in 2000. He then went to help Robert Schmidt with carpentry jobs on and off for 13 years. Willis continued to farm up until the fall of 2013, when he then needed the assistance of his sons and good friends to finish the fall harvest.
Willis served on the Herman-Norcross Community School Board, and was also a big advocate of the Herman-Norcross Community School. He liked looking through the yellow sheets, and going to auction sales for entertainment and to visit. Willis also enjoyed visiting with the social club at D&L. He especially enjoyed spending time and playing dominos with his grandchildren.
Willis died on Thursday, April 24, 2014 at his home near Herman, Minnesota. He lived to the age of 62 years.
He is survived by his wife: Roberta Volker of Herman; three children: Matthew (Kerstin) Volker of Herman, Christopher (Christina) Volker of Herman and Rachel (Joshua) Winther of Wood Lake; seven grandchildren: Allissa, Jacob, Haley, Patrick, Logan and Abigail Volker and Chloe Winther; his mother: Sylvia Volker; one sister: Marsha Kellen of Wheaton and one brother: Alan Volker (and friend: Helen Miller) of Hoffman. He was preceded in death by his father: Willard "Buff" Volker; his brother: Arnold Volker and nephew: Mark Christians.
Memorials are preferred to Lakeside Cemetery in Herman and Herman-Norcross Dollars for Scholars.
